ABOUT OUR GUIDE
Ms. Xhingyu Chen was born in Changsha, Hunan and moved to New York City when she was
a toddler. She attended Middlebury College in Vermont where she studied Studio Art and
Chinese. She has worked for museums and galleries in New York City, including an internship
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Ms. Chen moved to Shanghai in early 2002. She worked for several galleries here before
joining the team at BizArt Art Center in early 2004. During her time there, she managed the
artist-in-residency programs and help develop international programs. Working with such an
esteemed organization has helped her develop important contacts and relationships with
galleries and artists not only in Shanghai, but also in the rest of China and around Asia. She
started Shanghai Culture in late 2005.
When not working on art projects or guiding visitors, Ms. Chen does freelance writing. She
has written for such local publications as City Weekend and That's Shanghai.
She is the Shanghai correspondent for ArtInfo, an online arts publication under the LTB
Media family, Sculpture Magazine, Art Asia Pacific, and contributes to Nukta Art, Pakistan's

Update! Ms. Chen is currently working on a book on Chinese contemporary art, with a focus
on new media art. It is slated to be published in late 2010 by Schiffer Publishing.
Ms. Chen currently lives in the historic French Concession with her boyfriend and two cats.
